Pesach: A Celebration of Freedom and Renewal
31/03/2025

This year, as we observe Pesach (Passover) from April 12 to 20, we are reminded of its powerful themes, which resonate deeply with European society, emphasising freedom, unity, and the importance of remembering our shared past.
Shared Memory and Communal Responsibility
At the heart of Pesach is the Seder, a ritual meal where families and communities come together to recount the story of the enslavement of the Israelites and their Exodus from Egypt. This storytelling tradition is not only a way of preserving Jewish heritage but also an opportunity to reflect on universal struggles for freedom and dignity. Commemorating the past helps foster a shared sense of responsibility in combatting all forms of oppression.
An often-quoted phrase in the Torah—”because you were strangers in the land of Egypt”—reminds us of the importance of welcoming those in need, from refugees to members of marginalised communities. This value aligns with Europe’s efforts to promote diversity, solidarity, and social justice, reinforcing the idea that an inclusive society benefits everyone.
Looking Ahead
As we celebrate Pesach, we are inspired to build a Europe that values remembrance, embraces cultural diversity, and upholds the ideals of justice and freedom. By gathering around the Seder table, sharing stories, and committing to social action, we contribute to a future where these values continue to shape our collective identity.
