Meet a Jew
Meet a Jew, a project of the Central Council of Jews in Germany, introduces Jews and Judaism to non-Jewish people throughout the country. Over 300 volunteers visit schools, universities, sports clubs and other groups where they talk about themselves, their Jewish identity and answer questions about Jewish life in Germany today.
Since Jews make up only 0.2% of the population in Germany, most people don’t have personal interactions with them, and therefore their knowledge is not based on real-life experience. Meeting Jewish people face to face helps prevent and debunk stereotypes, replacing them with actual experiences.
The volunteers encourage dialogue, in which people feel free to ask questions about Judaism and Jewish life. The aim is not to teach about Judaism, but rather to provide direct, personal contact with Jews. These positive experiences often make a lasting impression.
