Shema Kolenou – Liberal Jewish Community of Montpellier (CJLM)

The only liberal community in the Languedoc Roussillon region, they are affiliated with the European and worldwide structures of liberal and progressive Judaism.

The community was founded in 2005. A Talmud Torah was created, wre more than 60 children were welcmed since, where all the big holidays of the Jewish calendar were celbrated, Shabbats, Hebrw classes for adults. A lot of Brit-milot,Bar-mitsva, weddings, and, sadly, funerals, were organized.

For year, many Rabbis came to visit. For two years, between 2009 and 2010, the community has benefited from a place of worship in the center of the city.

Today, since the sale of the space by its owner, the community is researching a new room to make it a synagogue. Good news will maybe be announced soon. Indeed, the creation of a new snagogue would be an important event and the certainty to be able to pass on a liberal Jewish identity.

As there is no external funding and all the activites proposed require a minimum budget, in 2010, the community obtained from the tax authorities the authorization to establish CERFA.
