HIAS helping refugees in Greece
Each year on August 19, the UN honors humanitarian aid workers by celebrating World Humanitarian Day. This year’s celebration pays special tribute to the heroes who have committed their lives to helping others in extreme circumstances, especially those working amid conflicts, insecurity, and risks linked to COVID-19. In 2019, 483 aid workers were attacked: 125 killed, 234 wounded and 124 kidnapped in a total of 277 separate incidents, according to the UN.
In Europe, the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society (HIAS) has been giving legal assistance to refugees in Greece since the migrant crisis began, following the Jewish values of Tikkun Olam, repairing the world.
