Migwan – Liberal Jewish Community Basel
Migwan was founded in September of 2004 by a small number of individuals and young families of varied backgrounds. Their common purpose was to create a home for liberal Judaism in the Basel area. From the outset, many “expats” have participated in the congregation, and all the events and services are held in Hebrew, German and English. A number of English-speaking members have become long-term residents of Basel or of other communities in the area. At present, Migwan has 100 adult members and about 45 children/young people, with membership of both groups steadily rising.
Migwan regularly offers a variety of cultural activities.
NEW – Unzgi for Hebrew speaking children
For the first time Migwan has a small Unzgi group of young children (ages 6-8) who speak Hebrew at home. They learn weekly with Carmit, focusing on the Hebrew letters and on Judaism in a really fun way. The community is very happy about this, and would love to welcome more Israeli and Hebrew speaking children.
Children/ Youth education
Education is one of the pillars of Migwan, and it aims at raising Jewish awareness and knowledge in a friendly and welcoming environment. Migwan offers:
- Weekly Hebrew and Judaism lessons for children ages 6-13, focusing on basic Hebrew literacy and Jewish traditions and values.
- Bnei Mitzvah preparation, both individually and in a group.
- Jeens (Jewish teens) group, for youth aged 13-18, who meet about once a month.
The classes and activities are conducted in German and English. A group of young children who speak Hebrew at home opened recently as well (see above).
